The Kimberley Rheumatic Heart Disease Prevention (RHD) Program is a collaborative initiative led by Kimberley Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations including, KAMS, Broome Regional Aboriginal Medical Service, Derby Aboriginal Health Service, Ord Valley Aboriginal Health Service, Yura Yungi Medical Service and Nirrumbuk Environmental Health and Services.
The partnership is committed to reducing the incidence of Acute Rheumatic Heart Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease across the Kimberley region through a community led approach that is focused on community priorities
Working closely with Nirrumbuk Environmental Health Services, the program takes a comprehensive approach addressing the social and environmental determinants that contribute to preventing Group A Streptococcus (GAS), the bacteria that causes ARF and RHD. Integrating prevention, primary health care and environmental health services the program is working towards long term initiatives for sustainable improvements in the health and wellbeing for Aboriginal communities across the Kimberley.
