Remote Early Childhood Supports (RECS) Program

The RECS Program supports Aboriginal families with children under 9 years who have developmental delays or disabilities, providing short-term early intervention services in remote Kimberley communities.

Program Details

Delivered through a culturally safe, community-led model, RECS brings together Aboriginal Family Support Workers (FSWs) and Allied Health professionals—Speech Pathologists and Occupational Therapists - to deliver early therapies and developmental support close to home.

The goal of RECS is to give children the best start in life by providing early support that helps them reach their full potential—reducing the need for long-term NDIS or disability supports later in life.

Family Support Workers are the heart of the program. They:

  • Identify and engage children and families in their communities;
  • Support families to start and continue early intervention therapies; and
  • Help ensure services are culturally appropriate and consistent between visits.

The Allied Health team, guided by FSWs, provides culturally safe assessments and therapy services through a family- and community-centred approach.

Designed by the Kimberley Aboriginal community, for the Kimberley Aboriginal community, RECS is a vital early intervention program that ensures children in some of Australia’s most remote areas can access quality developmental care and thrive.
