KAHRA
The Kimberley Aboriginal Health Research Alliance (KAHRA) unites Kimberley communities with local health services, and regional research organisations to drive evidence-based change and improve Aboriginal health outcomes in the region.
Established in 2019, KARAH’s founding members include Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Service (KAMS), Western Australian Country Health Service (WACHS), the Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia (AHCWA), the University of Western Australia (UWA), the Rural Clinical School of Western Australia (RCSWA), the University of Notre Dame Australia (UNDA), and the Telethon Kids Institute (TKI). This collaboration merges community wisdom, cultural strength, healthcare knowledge, and research expertise.
KAHRA is co-located with KAMS, but managed by an external Board of Directors, drawn from its founding members. Its activities focus on ensuring Aboriginal people lead and control health research in the Kimberley.
KAHRA has a close relationship with the Kimberley Aboriginal Health Planning Forum (KAHPF) Research Sub-committee, which oversees ethics approval at the regional level. KARAH administers the research review and secretariate function of the KAHPF Research Sub-committee and provides advice and recommendations to the KAHPF on matters of health research in the region. KAHRA also provide fee-for service research support and evaluation services to government and non-government organisations focusing on health services, programs, and initiatives in the Kimberley.
In 2023 KAHRA produced the Kimberley Aboriginal Health Research Model (KAHRM) which brings together information about the standards and expectations required of research in the Kimberley.
Researchers who are considering approaching Kimberley communities and/or organisations (including KAMS) to explore research opportunities must first download and read the KAHRM and engage with KAHRA.
